A trifecta for all-time great global stallion Love You at Maryborough on Thursday, March 11, 2021, is yet another statement for the how far the influence of French bloodlines has come in Australia in a relatively time.
Sweet On You, Central Otago and Morsure Damour finished one two and three in a Vicbred Platinum Home Grown heat for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings.
This gives Love You the clear lead at the top of the Victorian juvenile trotting sires premiership.
It is not that long ago that having a French stallion in the top bracket in Australia was unheard of.
In the 2017-18 racing season in Victoria – Australia’s premier trotting state – the progeny of North American stallions dominated the trotting scene.
Australia and New Zealand each had one representative in the top 10 on the state’s trotting sires premiership table, but other than that Canadian and United States stallions held sway.
In the background though, a change was coming led by Haras des Trotteurs.
Love You was already well established in Australasia – making his mark with NZ-bred, some of which were racing in Australia.
Change was on its way.
In 2018-19, Love You burst into the top 10 of the Victorian trotting sires premiership.
Just as significant in that same year was the appearance of the French-bred Orlando Vici, also on the Haras des Trotteurs stallion roster, in fourth position in the Victorian juvenile trotting sires premiership.
Orlando Vici’s momentum continued in 2019-20 with him rising to sixth in the Victorian trotting sires premiership with a winning strike rate of 25 per cent.
And to cap off the French influence, Quaker Jet was third in the Victorian juvenile trotting sires premiership, with Love You 10th with his biggest Australian two-year-old crop to date.
This evolution has also been reflected nationally.
In 2014-15, there was not one European-bred stallion in the top 20 for individual trotting winners.
Love You eased his way in in 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18, while Ready Cash was third as sire of two-year-olds in 2017-18
In that same season, while Love You continued to sit in the top 20, Orlando Vici was the leading first season trotting sire with three winners from just six starters from a crop of only 11 foals.
In 2018-19 Orlando Vici continued his progression with eight individual winners from the same crop to be second on the national three-year-old trotting sires table, with fellow French-bred Used To Me and Ready Cash also in the top 20.
And the French flavour did not stop there, Quaker Jet and The Best Madrik had winners from their first Australian crops.
So to have three three French-bred stallions - all from the Haras Des Trotteurs roster – in Orlando Vici, Quaker Jet and Love You sitting in the top 20 trotting stallions 2019-20, the change was obvious.
And it did not stop there.
Right in the top bracket of sire of two-year-old winners were Love You (second with nine individual winners) and the emerging Used To Me (fourth with five).
So, for buyers looking to jump on the French bandwagon, there will be no shortage of opportunities at the inaugural Nutrien Equine Standardbred Yearling Sale at Oaklands Junction on April 10-11.
